Mint Coins | 2026 20c Service Amid Strife Coloured Uncirculated Coin - 1941 WWII Greece & Crete
When Nazi Germany invaded Greece in April 1941, Australian troops of the 6th Division fought alongside Commonwealth forces before being forced to withdraw to Crete. Despite fierce resistance, the Allies lacked the weaponry and air support to hold the island, and were ultimately evacuated.
The campaign cost 1,600 Australians killed or wounded, and more than 5,000 taken prisoner. In the postwar years, the shared experience of fighting fascist aggression became a lasting bond between Australians, Greeks and Cretans. This coloured uncirculated coin commemorates their courage and sacrifice.
